KUPU - HAERENGA

Live client-led group project for Spark NZ

Graphic Designer: Matthew Brown
Motion Designer/Illustrator: Michael Dong
Interactive Designer: Joshua Tupara

This was a group student project led by Spark NZ for Kupu, a te reo Māori learning app. Here we received input and feedback from Spark on our ideas. We were tasked with enhancing or reimagining Kupu for it’s version 3 release. Our final concept was Kupu - Haerenga, a reimagining of the current app that focuses on a personalised te reo learning experience which adapts between users based on their skill level and reasonings for learn the language.

Draft Character Design & Walk Cycle

My main focus throughout this project was developing the explainer video along aside our other motion designer/illustrator. I primarily was responsible for developing the script/narrative, while also focusing on creating and animating the character throughout the video. I also focused on animating the background scenery which the illustrator had created, as well as compositing assets together to create the final video.

The final video created an interesting contrast between hand drawn and vectorised elements. Utilising beautiful hand drawn imagery, we managed to create dream like landscapes inspired by Aotearoa’s whenua. This combined with the vectorised character helped show the metaphorical journey a user may undertake when using Kupu - Haerenga.
