TI RAKAU

Live client-led group project for Spark NZ

Graphic Designer: Liam Benett
Motion Designer/Illustrator: Michael Dong
Interactive Designer: Elijah Francis

This was a student-based group project led by Spark NZ, where we received input and feedback on our ideas. We were tasked with creating an interactive experience for rangatahi around Aotearoa that showcases the power of 5G. Our final concept was Ti Rakau, a rendition of the classic Māori children’s game that utilises portals placed in varied locations around the country to play with one another.

Assets animated for brand and game UI

My main focus was on creating assets for the brand and game UI, while also working alongside another motion designer to create our explainer video. This explainer blends more traditional hand drawn cel animation with a cleaner vector style to help represent the past and present.

The final result was a clean vectorised style, contrasting with the more rough hand-drawn look of the first half. Using vector and typography animations with small amounts of 3D, this section explains what Ti Rakau is and how the audience can participate in this unique experience.
